A Tower Farm in a greenhouse
A climate-controlled greenhouse is the best option to ensure the success of a year-round operating Tower Farm. It helps protect against climate risks and allows for production commitments to customers.
Some recommended technical specifications include:
- The greenhouse structure should always extend from north to south.
- Rows of Tower Gardens should run from north to south.
- Full sun exposure and/or supplemental lighting are necessary for year-round production.
- Oversized fan and evaporative cooling system.
- Cooling wall with motorized fans on the north end and two-stage exhaust fans on the south end.
- Thrip-proof mesh covering the entire north end to minimize insect intrusion.
- Seed propagation always takes place near the north end, close to the cooling area.
- Roof vents for additional heat evacuation. Gable fans and motorized shutters are cheaper but less effective.
- Length should not exceed 30 meters between the fan and cooling wall.
Optional
- Misting system to contribute to cooling (mainly for desert climates).
- Climate controller.
- Concrete floor.
- White epoxy coating if possible, for easier cleaning and better light diffusion.
- 1-centimeter slope in the floor every 4 meters.
- Gas or geothermal heating.
